Quick answer: current WhatsApp API rates in India
Meta's current per-message rates for India (updated January 1, 2026):
- Marketing messages: ₹0.8631 per message (~$0.0107)
- Utility messages: ~₹0.115 per message (~$0.0014)
- Authentication messages: ~₹0.115 per message (~$0.0014)
- Service messages: Free, no cap
India supports local INR billing. These are Meta's charges only. On top of this, you pay your BSP platform fee plus any per-message markup (most Indian BSPs add 10-30%). For the full global rate card, see our complete WhatsApp Business API pricing guide.
What changed in January 2026
Meta increased India marketing rates by roughly 10 percent on January 1, 2026. The marketing rate went from ₹0.7846 to ₹0.8631 per message. Utility and authentication rates stayed roughly stable.
India supports local INR billing. You can create a WhatsApp Business Account billed directly in Indian Rupees, which simplifies reconciliation with your accounts in Tally, Zoho Books, or whatever accounting tool you use.
Note that existing USD-billed WABAs cannot be converted to INR billing. To use INR, you need to create a new WABA and select INR as the billing currency at setup. Talk to your BSP about migration paths if you are already running campaigns on a USD WABA.

What each message type actually costs in practical terms
Marketing at ₹0.8631 per message
This is what you pay for promotional broadcasts. A Diwali sale blast to 10,000 opted-in customers costs ₹8,631. A monthly campaign sending four broadcasts to a list of 25,000 costs roughly ₹86,310. Add 18 percent GST and you are looking at ₹101,846.
A D2C brand running aggressive WhatsApp marketing campaigns with 500,000 sends per month pays ₹4.31 lakh in Meta charges alone, plus GST and BSP fees. Use our WhatsApp ROI calculator to estimate your campaign returns. The biggest mistake Indian businesses make is blasting their entire contact list every week. A focused campaign to 5,000 engaged subscribers generally outperforms a scattered campaign to 50,000 cold contacts, and costs one-tenth as much.
Utility at ₹0.115 per message (often free)
This is where the real savings live. Utility messages are free inside the 24-hour customer service window. They are only charged when sent outside that window.
If a customer orders something from your Shopify store and you send them an order confirmation template through WhatsApp, the charge depends entirely on whether they recently messaged you. If they did, the window is open and the confirmation is free. If they ordered without any WhatsApp conversation, you pay ₹0.115. Adding a free WhatsApp widget on your store encourages inbound messages.
Authentication at approximately ₹0.115 per message
A medium-sized fintech sending 500,000 login OTPs per month pays approximately ₹57,500 in Meta charges at the base rate, plus GST. Compare this to SMS OTP rates in India at ₹0.12 to ₹0.20 per message on DLT-registered routes. WhatsApp is cheaper per message and has vastly higher read rates.
Service messages: free and unlimited
Service messages are your replies to customers who messaged you first, sent within 24 hours. They are free with no monthly cap since November 2024. A clinic chain handling 10,000 patient queries per month via WhatsApp pays nothing for service messages. AI chatbots help here because they reply instantly to every inbound, keeping the window open indefinitely.
Authentication-International: the trap for international fintechs
If your business is based outside India but you verify Indian users, read this carefully.
India has an authentication-international rate that applies when you send OTPs to Indian WhatsApp numbers from a WhatsApp Business Account registered outside India. The international rate is approximately $0.035 per message - over 20x the domestic rate. India's authentication-international rate is widely regarded as one of the highest of any market Meta serves.
The fix is simple: create a WhatsApp Business Account registered in India through a local BSP, and route your Indian OTP traffic through that WABA. Domestic rates apply, and you avoid the international premium entirely.
India-specific use cases for WhatsApp Business API
Direct-to-consumer e-commerce (D2C)
Indian D2C brands on Shopify, WooCommerce, or custom stacks are the heaviest WhatsApp API users in the country. A small D2C brand doing ₹50 lakh monthly revenue typically sends 15,000 to 30,000 messages. A medium brand at ₹2 crore sends 50,000 to 150,000. The magic in D2C is that most volume falls under utility which is free inside the service window. Explore our WhatsApp solutions by industry for more use cases.
EdTech and online learning
Indian EdTech platforms use WhatsApp for class reminders, assignment notifications, parent communication, fee reminders, and course promotions. A mid-sized platform can easily send 500,000 messages per month. The cost discipline here is separating truly transactional content from promotional content.
Healthcare and clinics
Clinics, diagnostic chains, and hospitals use WhatsApp for appointment reminders, test result delivery, and follow-up care. The effective messaging cost for a clinic chain is often shockingly low - often under ₹5,000 per month in Meta charges.
Real estate and property
Real estate agencies use WhatsApp for new listing alerts, viewing confirmations, and client follow-ups. A typical agency handling 200 active listings sends around 20,000 messages per month, roughly 60 percent marketing.
UPI and WhatsApp payments
WhatsApp Pay is integrated natively in India. Businesses can send payment links, collect payments, and send receipts all within WhatsApp. The entire purchase journey from discovery to payment happens in a single thread, which keeps the service window open longer and reduces messaging cost.
GST on WhatsApp Business API charges
18 percent GST is applicable on both Meta's messaging charges and your BSP platform fees. Meta's portion is classified as OIDAR (online information and database access or retrieval services).
If you are a registered Indian business, you are generally required to pay GST on imported services under the reverse charge mechanism. Your BSP may handle this automatically or pass through Meta's charges and leave you to manage the filing yourself.
For budgeting purposes, always add 18 percent on top of quoted rates. A ₹1 lakh monthly messaging spend becomes ₹1.18 lakh including GST. You can reclaim input GST if you are on the regular GST scheme (not composition).
Indian BSPs compared: AiSensy, Wati, Gupshup, Interakt, Whautomate
Most Indian BSPs add a per-message markup in addition to their monthly subscription. At 100,000 messages per month, a 20 percent markup silently adds ₹17,000 or more to your monthly bill.
AiSensy
Delhi-based BSP focused on Indian SMBs. Plans start around ₹1,500/month. Indian marketing messages charged at ₹1.09 per message (~26% above Meta's base rate of ₹0.8631). Strong in D2C and retail with Shopify integration.
Wati
Global provider with significant Indian market share. Plans start around ₹2,499/month. Approximately 20% markup on Meta's rates (marketing at roughly ₹1.04/message). Clean interface with CRM integrations. Watch for tier limits on seats and chatbot sessions.
Gupshup
Largest volume BSP in India, targeting enterprise senders. Custom pricing requiring minimum monthly commitments. Flat absolute markup of around ₹0.08 per marketing message on top of Meta's base. Competitive at scale but opaque and impractical for most SMBs.
Interakt
Indian-focused BSP acquired by Jio Haptik. Approximately 12.4% markup on Meta's rates (marketing at roughly ₹0.88/message). Deep Shopify integration, generally considered one of the easier options for first-time Indian users.
Whautomate
Singapore-based Meta Tech Partner. Zero markup, zero commission on Meta's per-message rates. What Meta charges is what you pay for messaging. Only additional cost is a flat platform subscription. For 100,000 marketing messages per month in India, this saves roughly ₹17,000-22,000/month compared to BSPs with 20-26% markup. Includes automation, Shopify integration, Razorpay payments, AI chatbots, appointment booking, multi-agent team inbox, and mobile app.
How to choose
- Under 10,000 messages/month: Per-message markup matters less. Focus on dashboard usability, onboarding ease, and integrations with tools you already use.
- 50,000-500,000 messages/month: Per-message markup becomes the dominant cost factor. A 20% markup at 200,000 marketing messages adds roughly ₹34,000 to your monthly bill. Always get per-message rates in writing before signing up.
- Above 1 million messages/month: Negotiate directly. Enterprise-focused providers like Gupshup become relevant at this scale.

How to reduce WhatsApp API costs in India
Practical strategies that work for Indian businesses specifically.
Put Click-to-WhatsApp buttons everywhere
Your website, Google My Business, Instagram profile, physical store, invoices, packaging. Every inbound message opens a free 24-hour window. For a typical Indian D2C brand, this single change cuts messaging costs by 40 to 60 percent.
Run Click-to-WhatsApp ads on Meta
The 72-hour free entry point window is the biggest free lunch. When users click your Facebook or Instagram ad and message your business, all messages are free for 72 hours. If you are already running Meta ads, this dramatically improves messaging ROI.
Classify templates carefully
Do not put promotional language in utility templates. Meta's reviewers will reclassify them as marketing. Keep “Your order is on the way” separate from “Your order is on the way, plus here are some products you might like.”
Use AI chatbots to extend service windows
A chatbot that replies instantly keeps the 24-hour window refreshing every time the customer responds. Well-designed support flows can run for hours or days entirely within free service messages.
Pick the right BSP
A BSP that adds 20% markup costs you real money at scale. Prefer BSPs that pass through Meta rates directly and charge only a transparent platform fee.
Move SMS OTPs to WhatsApp
Most Indian businesses still pay ₹0.12-0.20 for DLT SMS OTPs. WhatsApp authentication at ~₹0.115 is cheaper with much higher read rates (85-95% vs 15-25%). The migration pays back within months.
